Maybelline Dream Pure BB 8-IN-1 Skin Clearing Perfector | Review + FOTD

I first heard about Maybelline's new Dream Pure BB Cream on Teresa's blog, Money Can Buy Lipstick (her review and comparison to the original Dream Fresh BB Cream here).  I'd been having some breakouts on my chin and jawline and the idea of wearing a base product containing 2% salicylic acid seemed pretty brills.  I mean, why wear a regular base when you can wear a crime-fighting one that's working out your acne issues while you go about your daily routine?
*Quickie side vent: Living in Atlanta, a city consisting of 5.45 MILLION people and winning the title of the 9th largest metro area in the United States, one would assume I'd have decent access to drugstore products.  Alas, one would be wrong.  I cannot tell you how often I visit multiple retailers such as Target, CVS, Walgreen's, Publix, and Kroger, and roll snake eyes when attempting to track down a newly released drugstore makeup or skincare item.  It is muy loco.  I've even asked fellow Atlanta-area bloggers, including the lovely Quinn / Mama Fashionista, and they've agreed that newly released drugstore goodies can be quite elusive.  That being said, I was unable to find the Dream Pure BB Cream locally and resorted to ordering a tube from Walmart.com.  It worked out nicely because I was able to use a Walmart gift card a friend had given us for our wedding, and I received the BB Cream very quickly.  Anywho, back to the review!

Maybelline's Dream Pure BB promises to deliver the following 8 items of intrigue:
  • Clears acne
  • Conceals imperfections
  • Minimizes look of pores
  • Reduces appearance of redness
  • Adjusts to skin tone
  • Hydrates and smoothes
  • Enhances and clarifies skin
  • Is oil-free, with a lightweight feel
Compared to the original Dream Fresh BB (review here), the Dream Pure formula seems to provide a bit less coverage and dries to a matte finish.  I don't detect a medicinal scent.  The shade medium matches my NW25 skin well, but I can see it working for both someone slightly deeper and slightly fairer than me due to the sheerness of the coverage.  It's available in 5 shades: Light, Light/Medium, Medium, Medium/Deep, and Deep.

I can't speak to it's power to clear acne because it is not the only base product or acne product I use.  I can say that it has not caused me to break out.  On my combination oily skin, this BB cream holds up well for about 5-6 hours before my skin looks and feels a bit greasy.  I tested it both with and without a setting powder, and the results were the same.  In comparison, NARS Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer (review here) provides more coverage.  Also, my new favorite base product, Lumene Time Freeze CC Cream (review SOON!!), also provides more coverage and looks "just applied" even at the end of the day.  I personally prefer slightly more coverage when dealing with break outs.  The Maybelline Dream Pure BB might work better for me in the winter as the humid weather really poses a huge challenge for foundations.  Also, my skin looks REALLY spotty and freckled right now and posting the photos below was not an easy decision!
Left: No Makeup / Right: Wearing only Maybelline Dream Pure BB Cream in Medium
In the photo below taken outside on a sunny day, I've applied Dream Pure to the left side of my face and left the right side of my face bare.  You can see the left side looks more even overall and the spots and freckles are more camouflaged.

Overall, I'd recommend Maybelline Dream Pure BB Cream to someone seeking a salicylic acid base product with light coverage who has normal to dry skin.

Oh, and PS: a few days after I ordered this from Walmart, I found it on the shelves at my local CVS!

Where to Buy: Walmart, CVS, Target
Price: $8.99 USD MSRP (I got mine for $7.44 USD at Walmart)

What's your favorite summer base option?

  2. F$$$$CK I NEED THIS IN MY LIFE. You look amazing!!
I love the original formula and use it UNDER my mineral powders all the time. I love the formula. BUT THIS?? ACNE FIGHTER?? BABY COME TO MAMA! My skin LOVES salicylic acid and as an acne-prone girl I'm JUST learning that. DOH. I hope this comes up here soon!

  3. Hmmm, I'm torn over this. I probably don't really need it. I have my Estee Lauder Clear Difference BB Cream and I love that one. And this one sounds like the budget version of that. Still, I feel tempted to give it a try. Just to see, you know... Beauty bloggers have to see... :-)

  4. Love the split screen face of it bare and with the bb cream!! I have to say, I like the Dream Fresh BB but def wouldn't want LESS coverage! So I guess this is a no go for me, but I appreciate you saving me some money bc I prob would have gone out and bought it! I'm into Maybelline Dream Smooth Mousse right now - my skin is crazy dry and it loves the mousse feel and coverage.

  5. Despite the sheer coverage, I have to say it covers really nicely! The acne-fighting property sounds really cool but if it turns your face greasy in the afternoon, it's probably a big no-no for me. I'm already oily as it is without anything on my face! Sometimes I don't know if I like or hate Summer haha.

You look fantastic in the last pic! So cheerful! :D

  6. Right?! I would be singing it praises much more if my skin didn't get so oily from it in the afternoons! I've had great luck with the Lumene Time Freeze CC cream (review coming soon!) so trying this after that great success was like, "mmmeh." LOL about not being sure if you like or hate summer! I think summer's awesome when you're able to enjoy it poolside or go on a trip, but for day to day when you're just going to work and trying not to sweat and feel grody? Not so much! :)

  7. Agreed! I dug the Dream Fresh BB cream myself but unless I get tan enough that my freckles and spots look much less noticeable, less coverage isn't my jam, lol! I've heard great things about the Dream Smooth Mousse! Might have to give that a spin when the weather cools down this fall and my skin's less oily!

  8. LOL! Yes! Beauty bloggers *have* to try things out for themselves! I think if Maybelline made a Dream Fresh CC Cream, it would be perfection! The Dream Fresh didn't make me as oily but the coverage is verrrrry sheer. If it had a touch more coverage, I would love that product!

  9. Oh perfection!!! Yes, this does sound pretty much perfect for you! I think it could be a real fave for people with dry or normal skin. If you know your face lurves salicylic acid, you needs this! I could send you one if it's taking too long to get to CAN! PS: When you say a URL out loud, such as "beautyrocks.ca", do you say "dot C A" or "dot KAH"? I always think "dot KAH" but have always been curious to ask a genuine Canadian! :)

  10. Thanks, Julie!! Yes ma'am, if your skin is normal or dry, I think this could be an HG-er! :)

  11. dot C A hahaha. Never KAH hahahaha!
Thanks! I'll wait for now babe, and if it's not here soon, I'll be in the US in a couple of months anyways dropping Marky off at college! YIKES. It's so soon now.... :(

  12. Can definitely see the difference in tone but you do have good skin too! I didn't try the pure version but the original was ok, just can't deal with greasy after 5 hours though.

  13. Look at my little Glammie with her Marilyn hair, still LOVE it! You look fantastic, and thank you for a direct sunlight picture. That's the test; how it looks in the harshest of the harsh! I am super happy over the added salicylic acid. I've been waiting to hear some non-comedogenic foundation come up with it. Wahoo Pure BB! I unfortunately do not think I'll be purchasing this. Every BB I have tried (including the original Maybelline BB) makes me too dark/orange... WHAT A PITY! Because this looks great on you. Missing you and hoping you're still loving being a Bart!

    Groetjes uit Holland!

  14. LOL! You are so hilarious! "Never KAH"!
Aw, I'm sorry about Marky's upcoming move for college. I can't imagine how hard that has to be, especially considering how close you guys are. However, because you guys are close, she will be home for breaks often and you guys will definitely be going there to visit, too. I know it won't be the same, but you guys will get through it and be even better friends, I promise! Sending you giant hugs!

  15. OMG, bless you, Gaelle! I was definitely not thinking "good skin" thoughts when I saw these pictures, so thank you! I used this today as a primer for added coverage underneath Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua and so far (it's been on for 6 hours), my face isn't greasy at all. Yay! I love the idea of using it this way b/c the salicylic acid aspect just seemed like such a good idea for my skin!

  16. LOL! Thank you, SE! I am truly disappointed that they don't have one light enough for you, Captain Chantilly! I figured this might appeal to you a lot since I know you're a big fan of salicylic acid in moisturizers (why hello there, Clean & Clear!) but that's too bad about the color. You need to get some MAC Face & Body foundation or Illamasqua Skin Base foundation in White so you can mix it into these products that are too dark and lighten 'em up! And yes, thank you - I am happy to be a Barty Party, lol! :)
Happy times in Holland! Your insta pics are super fun!!

  17. Lovely FOTD, you look glowing! I've been using BadGal lash non stop lately and that's saying a lot considering how many mascaras I seem to have on the go right now.

  18. Thank you so much, Jenn! I'm horrified that I'm just now seeing your comment! o_O So sorry! Love me some Bad Gal Lash. Even with the giant brush, it's still able to get into the inner corners really well. LOVE! :)
