FIVE FAVE! | Single Eyeshadows

When one of my Instagram friends from Germany tagged me to share my 5 favorite single eyeshadows, I was inspired to turn it into a blog post.  While I consider myself to be a palette girl at heart, I have a few single shadows that I absolutely adore.  Read on to find out which one of these beauties I wore on my wedding day!

BURBERRY Midnight Brown: This beautiful brown is so multi-faceted, it gives the appearance of a 3 step eye look in a single swipe.  The creamy, ever-lasting formula is one of the best I've ever tried.  Midnight Brown was my wedding day shadow!

CLINIQUE Black Honey: This red-toned shimmery brown looks smashing against every eye color, much like the universally flattering lipstick of the same name. You can amp up the rich burgundy tones of this one by applying it wet. | '90s Neutrals FOTD tutorial here.

L'OREAL Bronzed Taupe: Bronzed Taupe is a gorgeous, cool taupe with a hint of brown.  This is another mono shadow that looks like a multi-step eye once applied to the lid.

URBAN DECAY Hijack: This blue-based teal shimmer is a stunner!  One of my favorite eye looks is to apply Hijack on the lid, blend out the crease with MAC Free to Be (a matte coral) and line the upper lashes and outer portion of the lower lash line with Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Junkie. | Review of Junkie here.

WET N' WILD Nutty: Nutty is a near exact dupe for MAC Satin Taupe, but the texture is even softer.  Oh, and it's only $0.99 cents USD!  I use it ALL the time.  If you follow me on Instagram, you've probably seen Nutty winking back at you from my daily makeup pics! ;)

What are some of your favorite eyeshadow singles?  Do you have a single that you've worn for a special occasion?

  1. Lovely picks, Kristen! My top 5 would be... Burberry Pale Barley, Burberry Midnight Brown, RBR Bohemian Waxwing, RBR Rufous-Tailed Weaver, RBR Rain Dove (I wore the latter two on my big day). I hope by singles you mean pressed eyeshadows, because if we have to take cream/hybrid/shadow sticks into consideration, I'm afraid I won't be able to pick 5!

  4. Loved the picks! And that wedding photo is seriously the most beautiful picture!! You LOOK LIKE A BRIDE MODEL. Like, those ladies in the magazines. The moody veil across the face looks way cool!

I do not know why I didn't have this realization when you first posted the FOTD 90's look, but I had no idea that Clinique also sold a Black Honey eyeshadow. It's beautiful. Like, I read that post, and I guess at the time it just didn't register that it was the same color as that crazy best-selling lipstick of theirs! #clueless ....

    MUCH LOVE,

  9. That teal eye look is to die for Kristen! I have UD Junkie and now feel that I NEED to get my hands on Hijack to try and replicate that look :) Multidimensional single shadows are such a timesaver and definitely my goto picks for the working week - I don't need to think about what I'm doing but they look like I've gone to more deliberate effort.

  10. You know. I love all these shades, and I would DEFINITELY buy it if all these colours form an eye shadow palette. Let's just call the palette Kristen :-)

  11. I really need to try those infallible eye shadow singles. I've heard nothing but raves. I tend to stick with high end eye shadows and drugstore with the rest of my makeup. However when my MAC Rice paper shattered one morning, I picked up Brulee from W&W because I was having a well what the heck moment. Plus W&W has upped their game so much since I tried them in middle school. I LOVED Brulee. A little less yellow than Rice paper, but still worked as a nice everyday lid color. I'll totally have to snag Nutty. (;

  14. Hi, I'm a blogger 'mate' of Stephanie Eva's (I'm from Australia) and I thought I'd swing by and check out your blog as she mentions you often! I love these eyeshadows, that hijack one is gorgeous...although I'm a bit makeup shy so probably wouldn't be brave enough to wear it! The neutral shades are lovely too...they are more what I'd wear. Love the sparkle to them!

  15. I only own a small amount of single shadows, and none of them are my favorites. I've heard really great things about the Burberry shadow, though! And your wedding photo is goooorgeous!

  16. totally with you on the l'oreal "bronzed taupe" - one of my faves, along with their "iced latte" shade too - dupe for stila's popular "kitten." really into mac "cork" all day erryday.

  17. Eep! Thanks for creating a sudden, intense Midnight Brown lemming for me, Kristen! D: I don't need anymore brown eyeshadows!!!

(But man, do I ever want some more.)

  18. bronzed taupe is one of my favorite! it looks so good one you. and can we just talk about how gorgeous you were on your wedding day? so pretty!

  19. Thank you so much, Hannah! I've never felt happier in my whole life than on my wedding day; I think it showed, lol! Bronzed Taupe is definitely a desert island contender. So easy, yet looks complicated on. Genius!

  20. Ha ha! Rae, you need to just get Midnight Brown. I waited eons before buying it myself and it was worth the wait! Such an incredible formula and the color is so nuanced. I think you might need just 1 more brown eyeshadow before it's all said and done. ;)

  21. Cork is a staple!! Anastasia BH has one called Sienna that's a slightly rusty matte brown and it looks AMAZING in the crease! I have it in the Maya Mia palette, but I'm thinking about buying it in single form so I can take it everywhere!

  22. Thank you so much, Jenny! I used to own no palettes...can you believe it? Now I'm a freak for palettes, lol! For a single shadow to remain in my collection, it has to be slammin' beyond comparison. Burberry shadows are incredible. Soft, nuanced, amazing shades. Even the simplest seeming color has so much more going on. Truly worth owning at least one! :)

  23. Aw, thank you so much, Jaa! I was pretty happy with the makeup job I did on my wedding day. The only minor fail was an errant eyelash strip, but I glued it back down and went about having the time of my life! YAS! You NEED Nutty to believe it! It's dreamy. If you didn't get one before you left, you email me your address STAT so I can send you one! It's that good!

  24. Thank you so much, Agata!! Satin Taupe is lovely, Nutty is a little creamier. They're both workhorse shades that you could wear daily and not get bored of!

  25. The infallibles are pretty amazing! Definitely check them out, Iced Latte is another popular one. Yes! You discovered the magic of the Wet n' Wild singles! They are freaking amazing! So buttery soft and multi-dimensional. And less than $1.?!??! You definitely need to put Nutty on your drugstore snag list! It would look beautiful on you!

  26. Ha ha! The Kristen Palette! Man, I like the sound of that! I'll have my people call your people right away... ;)

  28. We are on a makeup twinning ROLL, Melissa! Cross-continental makeup twinscapades! I love it!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Thank you so much, Shari! I'm glad you like the 5 Fave series! Holy Toledo, Clinique Black Honey would pop so much on you! Must swatch it! It's like a cooler-yet-browner NARS Fez? And thank you for the compliments about my wedding pic! That was the best day ever! :)

    ReplyDelete
  30. Thank you, Divya! I never thought I could rock Hijack until I just put it on one day and though, "Oh...this is fun!" And there is nothing wrong with neutral browns! Neutral browns rule my heart and soul, too! <3

  31. Heh heh "nice set of solos" - haven't heard that before! LOL, just kidding! You need a Burbs single. That's just the long and short of it. They are bombastically boss. And thank you for the wedding picture compliment! I wish I could re-live that day again from start to finish. It was literally the best!

  32. Thank you so much, Stephanka! We had the best photographer who suggested "moody veil across face" and other hilarious bits of direction! Without her, there'd be just a bunch of pictures of dorks smiling! Get thee to Clinique and swatch Black Honey on yourself! It would look pretty wunderbar on you with your pale skin and ethereal hair!

  33. Nutty is a luxury shadow hidden amongst the $.99 cent bin FO REAL! I'd have to say, texture-wise, Nutty is on par with the best Urban Decay shadows you can think of. Bronzed Taupe is one of those shadows that looks different on everyone and is effortless and everyone should be issued a pot of it on their 21st birthday, lol! ;)

  34. Hey Jenn! YES! Nutty is incredibly underrated! It's such a luxurious little shadow. I totally get the back ups idea on this one. Excellent idea. I'm going to CVS now to pick up another one for me, lol! :)

  35. PALE BARLEY! That's the one you and Tracy rave about! I am always tempted by it; may have to bring it home for my birthday next month?! And your mind works so much like mine - I thought the same thing about "just how are we categorizing these? Single pans? Pigments? Powders v. Creams?" I just went with the first 5 that came to mind when I thought of the best of the best in powder format! I'm saving the Five Fave cream shadows for a later date! :) I love that you wore Rain Dove on your wedding day! Are we ever going to get a peek at you guys all dolled up? :)

  36. Hi Amber!! Any blogger mate of Stephanie Eva's has to be a cool cat, lol! Neutrals are always a good idea; anyone can pull off a great brown or taupe, even the shy! :) Thank you so much for stopping by! I've been trying to get your comment to post for weeks and it finally did! Disqus must've been having a hiccup of sorts!
