REVIEW! | Maybelline Color Tattoo Blue Paradise, Precious Pearl (LE)

People are going crazy for the new limited edition Maybelline Color Tattoos, $6.99 MSRP, for Summer 2013 and after seeing their duochrome beauty in person, I can see why!

It's exciting to see duochrome shades available from drugstore beauty brands; previously they were only seen in medium to high end brands.  If you have no idea what a "duochrome" shade is, basically it's a color that contains pigments that make it appear to be a different color depending on the light.  My first duochrome encounter was with MAC's Bad Fairy nail polish, a gorgeous deep burgundy that flashed metallic copper and sometimes even green, depending on the light (swatches here thanks to Christine at Temptalia).  I LOVE duochrome shades in general because they're extra interesting.  They're like the prize in the bottom the cereal box!

Maybelline's limited edition Summer 2013 Color Tattoo collection features eight gorgeous shadows.  I've been able to find them at my local drugstores but it's been hit or miss.  CVS had two a few of weeks ago, one Walgreens had none, and the other had all eight.  They are usually found frolicking in their own limited edition display away from the rest of the Maybelline line.  You may have to break out your scavenger hunting skills if you want to track down all eight shades!  Depending on your outlook, this could be fun or slightly frustrating.  I like to think of it as hunting the elusive jackelope for the beauty set.

I picked up Blue Paradise and Precious Pearl from CVS.

Blue Paradise is a cool icy blue gray that shifts iridescent violet.  Precious Pearl is an off-white that shifts to a metallic pink.  I find Color Tattoos to have a ten second dry-down, so you have time to work with it before it's locked in place.  Speaking of "locked", Maybelline claims you'll get 24 hours of wear with these, which I've not found true for me personally.  I got 6 hours of wear without a primer and 11 hours of wear with a primer.  The creasing and fading was significant without a primer at the 6 hour mark.  I have oily lids, and I'm the first to say almost every shadow creases on me if I don't use a primer.  If your lids are normal or dry, you'll probably get more wear time from Color Tattoos.  If you have oily lids like me, I definitely recommend using a primer with these.
Sheered out / Built up: Maybelline Color Tattoo Blue Paradise, Precious Pearl
The formula is creamy without being overly so, and they can be built up for more intense color or sheered out for a softer look.

I'll be posting my review of Seashore Frosts and Lavish Lavender tomorrow, so check back if you're interested in seeing those swatched!  Have you been able to hunt down any of these?

My Rating: B
Where to Buy: Amazon, local drugstores (US)

  2. These are pretty! I love duochromes. But even with a primer these don't last on me because my oily lids are CURSED I tell you. :)

  3. Aw! I feel you on the oily lids front! I wonder how much wear someone with normal lids would get out of these?

  6. Hmm is it me or do they look really sheer when they're sheered out? Are they reasonably pigmented on the lids?

I have Bad to the Bronze and Bold Gold. It's one of the best formulas I've tried, but we have a very limited selection of shades here and don't get any of the LE ones!

  8. They can be built up using a brush or reallllly sheered out. In my excitement to post my reviews, I realized I didn't take any pictures when I was wearing these! Oops! #bloggerfail I'm sorry you guys don't get any of the LE shades there. Bad to the Bronze is one that I want to try because I've heard such great things about it!
